Canine Acid reflux – As we know that dogs can also suffer from indigestion that leads to acidity in the stomach. Dogs may suffer from stomach-related problems which lead to acid reflux in dogs. In this, it may be painful, uncomfortable, and even result in vomiting.

What we can know about acid reflux in dogs? – Acid reflux in dogs

Canine acid reflux means that coming out gastric and intestinal fluids from the stomach and comes into the esophagus. Acid reflux is similar to reflux in human beings. It may cause inflammation, and irritation, and even destroy the lining of the esophagus due to acid.

There is a sphincter present in the esophagus that prevents the entry of fluid into it. So that fluid can not come into the esophagus but in some cases of acid reflux, there is the possibility of fluid entrance into the esophagus.

Acid reflux in dogs is also known as gastroesophageal reflux. Sometimes it is a huge cause of gastrointestinal problems. So we should aware of this condition.

Clinical symptoms or signs of acid reflux in dogs :

  1. Vomiting bile.

2. Food regurgitation.

3. Pain in swallowing.

4. Weight loss.

5. Restlessness.

6. Discomfort in dogs.

7. Loss of appetite ( anorexia ).

8. Teeth grinding.

9. Snapping jaw.

10. Fluid in the mouth.

– Bile is a substance whose color is yellow it also comes when a dog may suffer from vomiting. Pigments will form it such as bilirubin and biliverdin.

Bile also comes out when there is an empty stomach of the dog.

Canine acid reflux can also be due to food regurgitation because sometimes there is increased pressure on the esophagus and muscles of the stomach that causes food to spit back up which means regurgitation. This food type is undigested food that comes out of the mouth.

Causes of canine acid reflux –

  1. Chronic vomiting.
  2. Irritation by allergens.
  3. Production of acid in the stomach.
  4. Tight harness or neck chain.
  5. Anesthesia.

ANESTHESIA CAUSES CANINE ACID REFLUX BECAUSE IT RELAXES THE SPHINCTER AND FLUID MAY TRAVEL FREELY.

Diagnoses: If your dog is suffering from this condition then take your dog to a nearby vet for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Treatment of acid reflux: Your vet may recommend antacid drugs or a few injections that help to stop vomiting for example antiemetics drugs.

Best food for dogs in acid reflux :

1. Pumpkin.

2. Fish.

3. Rice.

4. Chicken.

5. Banana.

6. Bone broth.

7. Peeled and baked sweet potato.
