As you know that fever means high temperature, Normally body temperature of dog is 101°- 102.5° Fahrenheit. If dog temperature is high then this range become more as usual Human beings normal temperature of body is 97.6°-99.6°.
If the temperature of dog is 103° F that consider as high fever in dogs. When temperature touches 106°F that means dog fever is serious and fetal.
How to know if your dog is suffering from high fever ?
Normally temperature of dog body rises in stress or exciting condition so it is difficult to determine temperature of dog body. When your dog does not eat anything or drink, restlessness, stress, suffering from any disease etc. These all feature may cause fever.
One thing remembered that dog body temperature can vary from morning to evening because in dogs temperature is not constant. The best way to check temperature in dog is thermometer. You can use digital or mercury thermometer for checking body temperature.
How to check dog temperature is high or not ?
1. Move digital thermometer in rectum not completely. Touch tip of thermometer to mucus membrane for sometime. Remove it slowly and check on meter range if this is high then dog is suffering from fever.
2. Touch dog inner ear for sometime you can feel hotness in dog ear so this is also an interesting way to know dog body temperature.
3.Some people also believe that if your dog nose is wet or cold then temperature is normal. But when dog nose is hot or dry then dog may suffer from high fever. This method is not accurate to diagnose your dog for fever or not.
Causes of fever in dogs :
1.Infection from bacteria, virus and fungal.
2.Urinary tract infection.
3.Respiratory tract infection.
4.Ear infection.
5.Tooth infection.
6.Stress.
7.Any external injury or scratch.
8.Ingestion of human medicine, toxic substances and poisonous things.
Eventually you should also know about symptoms of fever in dogs are :
1.Runny nose.
2.Panting.
3.Shivering.
4.Low energy.
5.Anorexia ( loss of appetite ).
6.Coughing.
7.Vomiting.
8.Ear and nose is heated.
9.Red or glassy looking eyes.
Decidedly fever medicines are known as antipyretics.
Treatment of fever :
If your dog may suffer for high fever then immediately take him to nearby vet for proper diagnosis and treatment.
In emergency you can give : 1.Meloxicam oral suspension 3-4 ml / 10 k.g.b.wt ( Orally ).
2.Himpyrin syrup 2ml / 10 k.g.b.wt ( orally )
3.Multivitamin tonic.
So,this is the first aid of fever in dogs. Eventually you can use this first aid for treating fever. Also check the other symptoms of disease when treating fever in dogs. Such as in respiratory disease like pneumonia etc.
