Rabies is the dangerous viral disease in animals mostly affects dogs. Rabies also affects human beings. It occurs due to rabies virus. This disease is fetal in nature.
HOW CAN YOUR DOG GET RABIES ?
Saliva contain rabies virus that means rabies is secreted from saliva. It passes to other animals by biting of a rabid dog. It can also spread from an open wound. When this virus come in contact with blood stream of healthy animals that animal known as rabid animals. It can also spread by licking.
What is Rabies ( Hydrophobia– Fear from water ) ?
DEFINITION : A zoonotic viral disease of animals and is characterized by excitement, paralysis, tremors and death.
ETIOLOGY/REASON/CAUSES : DUE TO RABIES VIRUS ( Rhabdo virus/Lyssa virus ) which is an neurotoxin in nature and excreted through saliva.
TRANSMISSION:
1. Through biting.
2. By licking.
3. By mongoose bite.
SYMPTOMS: THERE ARE THREE FORMS OF SYMPTOMS IN CASE OF DOGS;
a. PRODROMAL FORM: What is Rabies
1. Change in behavior.
2. Ignorance of the owner.
3. Anorexia ( loss of appetite ).
4. Biting of the flies.
b. FURIOUS FORM :
1. Excitement.
2. Out of control.
3. Pupil dilate.
4. Excessive salivation.
5. Temperature normal.
6. Dropped jaw.
c. PARALYTIC FORM/DUMB FORM :
1. Excessive salivation.
2. Paralysis of lower jaw, pharynx and larynx.
3. Death within 7- 10 days.
DIAGNOSIS:
- By history of dog bite.
- By symptoms death within 7-10 days.
- Post mortem examination ( Lession ) – intra cytoplasmic inclusion bodies and these bodies are known as Negri bodies in brain.
TREATMENT:
- WASH THE WOUND WITH CARBONIC ACID, TINCTURE IODINE OR WITH ANY ANTISEPTIC SOLUTION AND KEEP THE WOUND OPEN.
- ANTI-RABIES VACCINATION ( DOSE- DOGS/CATS – 2ML ).
